The Giants Gate

SightsNature & Viewpoints

Here on the eastern side of the mountain, two ruddy stone pillars stand guard and look out over Hanö Bay. According to folklore, the Giant Stone has his dwelling in the mountain and the pillars are the gateway to his strange garden. When passing sailors peeked in through the gate from their ships, they sometimes drowned in the bay. During the 19th century, stone was quarried on the mountain's steep side. The remains of an old forge from that time can be seen down on the rocky shore. Next to the path to the north, pebble fields appear. They are remains from a time when the sea was higher than it is today. At its highest, the water was at a level of 32 meters at Stenshuvud. The lowest coastline has been about 40-50 meters below current sea level. Species such as honeysuckle, blueberries and wood ivy thrive here and you may see a shy viper lying and sunbathing
